Chelsea new-boy Mark Stein sounded the battle cry as Glenn Hoddle’s side arrived at Elland Road in November 1993 looking to end a four game losing sequence. Stein, a £1.5 million signing from First Division Stoke City just over a week earlier, said the Chelsea players were totally behind player-manager Hoddle as he bid to halt a growing Stamford Bridge crisis, but the Londoners found little to encourage them at Elland Road as Leeds United inflicted a 4-1 defeat on them to maintain fourth place in the EPL.

Manager Howard Wilkinson said afterwards that he could hardly have written a better script for the game. Not only did his side chalk up another big score but the way chances were created and taken, and the players who actually scored the goals, gave further cause for celebration. A first-ever goal at Elland Road for £2.7 million striker Brian Deane, a couple for Rod Wallace, his first home goals for the season, and a cracker from David Rocastle were the undoubted highlights of an entertaining display. So too was the performance of teenage right-back Gary Kelly who, in addition to his defensive duties, managed to play a significant part in two of his side’s goals. Republic of Ireland manager Jack Charlton had popped along to Elland Road presumably to check on the form of Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, but must have gone away more impressed with Kelly’s efforts.

As a result of United’s power play, Chelsea were swept aside almost without trace, though on this showing Chelsea could hardly be classed as one of the EPL’s stronger teams. A second-half blitz brought United a victory that extended their unbeaten EPL sequence to nine games and increased their goal tally to ten in the last three games. Brian Deane began the execution when he opened the scoring in the forty-seventh minute using his strength to shrug aside Frank Sinclair before hitting a thunderous shot out of the goalkeeper’s reach.

Deane turned goal-maker four minutes later when he forced Eddie Newton into a defensive error and sped away to provide a swift right-wing cross which Rod Wallace turned in from close range. A two goal advantage became three in the fifty-sixth minute when another neat piece of work by Gary Kelly got Rod Wallace clean through to fire in a rising shot from near the edge of the penalty area. Chelsea keeper Kevin Hitchcock was beaten again in the seventieth minute, when David Rocastle skipped past one defender and between two others to wrap in a great shot to score. Chelsea substitute Neil Shipperley denied United complete defensive satisfaction when he fired in from an acute angle six minutes from the end.
